About the Author – Mereana Wilson
OpenNews NZ was founded by Mereana Wilson, a New Zealand
journalist and editor with a strong passion for storytelling and digital
media. Born in Hamilton and raised in Tauranga, Mereana developed an early
interest in how news influences communities and shapes public understanding.
After completing her studies in journalism and media communications in
Auckland, she began her career as a junior reporter at a regional news
organisation. During this time, she covered a wide range of topics,
including local council decisions, community events, human interest
stories, and breaking news.
Through her experience in journalism, Mereana noticed a growing gap in
New Zealand’s digital news landscape. Many important local stories were
either delayed online or lost among international headlines. She felt
strongly that New Zealand needed a dedicated platform focused on local
voices and timely reporting.
In 2023, she founded OpenNews NZ with the goal of creating a simple,
trustworthy, and accessible news platform. Starting from a small workspace
in Wellington, she built the website as a solo project before gradually
expanding it into a small editorial team.
Today, Mereana continues to lead OpenNews NZ with a strong focus on
independent journalism, accuracy, and community-driven reporting. Her
vision is to ensure that every important story in New Zealand receives
the attention it deserves.
